Blue Peter star sinks Championship Hopes

4th November 2009
The final rounds of the Delphi British Truck Racing Championship were as dramatic as ever at the famous Brands Hatch circuit. 2008 Runner up and winner of the last 4 rounds, Elton Boocock was spectacularly knocked off the track by the new Blue Peter presenter Andy Akinwolere.

Akinwolere, who joined the Blue Peter team on the 18th September had been trained to race the 5.5 tonne trucks for the popular BBC Childrens programme. As the finale to his training and the main item for the show which goes out on the 10th November at 16.35, he was placed in the penultimate round of the truck racing championship. With only 2 points clear of the 3rd place rival, Boocock was the only driver on the track who could take the championship title from the year long leader. At the same time, he needed to protect his narrow lead for the runner up title. After problems in qualifying causing Elton to start from the back of the grid, he quickly moved through the pack and after only one lap had moved from 15th to 6th as the BBC presenter smashed into the side of Boocock sending them both into a spin which left Boocock in the tyre wall.

Not happy to sit out the race, Boocock was quickly back on the track and despite sparks, flames and a large trail of burning tyre rubber, was in ‘hot’ pursuit of the race leaders and managed to overtake positions in the 3 laps that he stayed out before finally accepting the black flag ordering him to end the race. With no points taken (D.N.F.), the day 2 race was again to be started from the back. With the truck partially repaired, Elton moved from 15th to 7th in just ¼ of a lap in a stunt which was nothing short of unbelievable. With nothing to lose, Boocock weaved through the grid of 15 100mph capable heavies, to achieve 5th place. No further gains were to be made as the real effects of the previous race were realised in handling problems and uneven braking.

The season ended with Elton being knocked off the runner up slot and pushed into 3rd place for the 2009 championship as a result of the incident. At least he can say that he finally got his ‘Blue Peter badge’ after Andy, feeling slightly bad, handed over his very own.
